Kerik Time

Kerik’s (almost) officially getting indicted, two unnamed insider sources tell CNN. The grand jury’s ruling won’t be unsealed until tomorrow, which is when we’ll know the official charges.

Best reason to believe these anonymous tipsters: Rudy’s already trying to put some distance between himself and Kerik, saying everyone makes mistakes and on balance he was still a good mayor (which also makes us think Rudy thinks there’s some merit to these charges).

Right, Rudy. You modeled your administration on the mob, demanding loyalty over all else, your closest aide had mafia ties — but the mob is all about protecting people, and you did a pretty good job of that.  Besides, what’s a little corruption between friends?

Update: Michelle Malkin, who is no New Yorker but is nonetheless probably right about this, points out that while picking Kerik as his police commissioner without checking him out thoroughly might be forgivable, nominating him to head the Department of Homeland Security — a post that, from Rudy’s point of view, ought to be a really big deal — was perhaps less so. You can’t claim to be a rigorous defender of the homeland and then appoint someone you haven’t actually vetted to be the official in charge of that defense.
